In order to adequately live and support oneself, our current minimum wage is not sufficient enough. With only $4.25 per hour wages, one would definitely need to work at least two or three jobs just to be able to buy food and clothing. The state lawmakers should give people who are poor an opportunity to live adequately and for them to be able to support themselves and raising minimum wage would do the trick.

I think that Ohio lawmakers should raise the minimum wage because 4.25 is not enough to live off of. That is barely enough to buy bread and butter, and what if you have a kid or to. How are you going to support them making 4.25?

Clearly, minimum wage is not nearly enough to live on, and we should do something about it. People are forced to work almost 3 jobs to barely make ends meet. Minimum wage should be something we can solely depend on, coming from one source to live properly on, instead of 2 or 3,w ith its sufficient funds. People need to live, and they cannot do it, simply, on what we currently call minimum wage.

I am all for the increase of minimum wage.
Instead of an increase of government and lawmakers' pay they should invest their money into the wealth of the nation. What is the government going to do when everything gets out of control and everything falls on them. People working for minimum wage can't afford health care-- is the government going to pay for that? I don't think so.

We all live the columbus area and we know what it feel like to need something and not be able to get it. Well that's how a lot of single mothers feel when they are out doing all they can to give their children what they need in life. No parent in this world can do that making five or six dollars an hour. How the government expects this to happen I cannot answer that. I believe that state minimum wage should be raised to at lease nine dollars for a parent who lives on their own and pays their own bill. No one can survive off of five dollars and fifteen cents an hour-- that is just outrageous. I am a senior in high school and it's hard trying to make it off of six dollars and ten cents so I couldn't even imagine how an adult with three kids feels.

The state of Ohio should increase the minimum wage to at least $8 an hour. The minimum wage is so low that even the people who have a job at that amount are living below the poverty line. People have to depend on check to check to live their lives and to me that is not how it should be like. The minimum wage as it is now can make the death rate in Ohio increase because these people working for $4.25 an hour cannot afford health insurance. Ohio's minimum wage can't pay for the cost of living as it is now.

I ask myself, 'is minimum wage really minimum wage?' The lowest wage by law or contract, which an employer may pay an employee for a specific job? That’s what minimum wage is by LAW or contract. A bill should be passed to raise the amount of minimum wage. There are too many single parents who work hard on minimum wage, and it's hardly getting them by. I think minimum wage should be increased only for the simple fact that the price of living has increased and it would only be right for wages to be increased. I'm pretty sure Ohio's economists and business owners aren't living off of the same pay from a decade and a half ago. But at the same time our community that is for a higher minimum wage can't expect for it just to be handed to them-- this is the time we need to stand up and fight for a change. until then i don't really think we have any room to criticize how things are.

Ohio should raise the minimum wage some, the cost of living is going up. Some of the minimum wage workers can't even afford health insurance. The bottom line is that some Americans are extremely greedy! Many believe that money brings happiness, but there are plenty of people and families out there who are poverty stricken who share many smiles throughout their toughest days. What Americans fail to realize is that money is NOT everything. Lawmakers and business owners themselves would and do talk about how it is hard for them to get by on their income! At the outset of a new millennium, America has succeeded in making a fool of itself by proclaiming prosperity while stomping on the impoverished masses with a heeled boot of neglect. Business owners, including the ignorant wealthy, never cease to amaze me with their self-indulgent pretentiousness. Marked at fifteen years and running, the minimum wage has lingered at a choking $4.25/hr, thus, bringing about a seventeen percent increase in the number of poverty-stricken households in Ohio since the year 2000. A Bachelors degree is now needed to attain what we would deem a 'suitable' job, when it used to almost always ensure affluence 30 years ago. Looking at the chain of reaction, how much more has the non-collegiate worker’s lifestyle paled in comparison? Ohio must step up to the national minimum wage rate immediately, then work arduously to steadily increase said wage to $8.00/hr (this is a meager goal in and of itself). If not for being married to my dad, my own mother would be huddled with the insolvent masses, and she is making a little over $12.00/hr! (This figure is based off of the standard poverty-line of a $16,000/yr income). For a poor family, a visit to the emergency room can mean the difference between having enough money to afford an apartment, and being relegated to the cold, damp streets. If we have enough funds to support a multi-billion dollar war, then we have the power to raise a debilitating wage. The bridge between rich and poor must be gapped, lest a second French Revolution occurs in the States. Economic Darwinism only flourishes when greed zips the petticoat pockets of national leaders.

I believe that the state of Ohio should raise the minimum wage rates. When I worked in the summer, I made $5.15 an hour. That amount of money was not enough money for me to handle the business that I needed to take care of, so I could only imagine someone who works a job that makes that much money for a living. Those bi-weekly checks would not support any family. If companies are worried about the jobs that they provide being too much for the companies to financially handle, therefore, causing job cuts, they need to invest in making quality jobs that people would like to perform, therefore, adding more business to their companies, increasing their profits and satisfying their employees. Quality jobs with understandable benefits and health care would benefit both companies and their workers. Minimum wage isn't any sort of motivation for anyone to get up and want to go to work in the morning, especially sitting at the federal rate of $4.25 an hour and the state rate of $5.15 an hour. If the minimum wage rate was raised, there are pros and cons to it, but in the end, everyone would be satisfied.

The only reason Businesses complain is because they would have to take a pay cut to allow someone else a chance to live a normal, comfortable life. Ohio's minimum wage needs to be raised to the federal rate at a minimum. Even people who get paid beyond the federal minimum wage have trouble sustaining themselves and unless you live with others you will have no means to support yourself. Keeping a minimum wage at its current rate will inevitably lead to higher government support for families. Although a drastic change in the minimium rage rate will have the potential of bringing about a negative result because a drastic increase in wages will result in a near proportional increase in the price of comodities, if it is raised gradually, the economic crisis may be averted. If the minimum wage is raised, people will be better able to take care of themselves, which may lower the nead for government spending on family aid, and in the future, result in more money to be spent on other programs within the state.

As far as working adolescents, students can't afford gas, lunch, and to go to college working minimum wage jobs. The rate needs to be raised! IT'S TIME TO SPEAK UP, CITIZENS.

i think they should raise minimum wage to $8.55 an hour because people have to live on 5 dollars an hour living on their own. and most students have to pay for college working part time for mininum wage.

I think that minimum wage should be the same everywhere which is about $7.00 an hour because for one, no one can really live on the minimum wage that we’re given now no matter how old you are. I'm 17 and I can't live off of $6.00 an hour, so I think that the minimum wage should go up.

I feel as a Student who works part-time on miinimum wage it is still hard to live off the money i earn because i take care of myself and school is not cheap. Raising the minimum wage will help me with my school finances as well as my living expenses.

The minimum wage is way too low. There are kids these day who have to pay for their lunches themselves and anything else they need or want. Some because their parents can't afford to be giving them money every week and some because their parents just refuse to give them money.

Some people believe that a higher minimum wage will cause businesses to close but I feel that this is not true. If the minimum wage is raised this will give people more money to spend and they will put it back into the businesses. It is a cycle.

I believe that Ohio should raise the minimum to $6.15 an hour instead of the minimum wage which is now $4.25. This is because most family's cannot support their families with the current minimum wage.

i believe that the issue of minimum wage is very confusing, but i happen to agree with the restaurant owner from cleveland-- if the proposition is fulfilled then inflation is more than likely to happen. The prices will also be affected negatively. It's hard to think that ohio has the 2nd lowest minimum wage rate in the country, but i don't believe this is the right solution to that problem, it isn't safe enough.

They need to raise it, Life is already hard for a Holy Ghost man to get by on a part-time job and a full-time ministry. Any inflation caused will be handled just like every other time.

I think the minimum wage should be increased to at least $6.25 per hour. It is not possible to live on the current minimum wage and a change must be made. However, increasing it too much would hurt businesses, so $6.25 is a good compromise.

I think they should raise the minimum wage, to at least where it would be equal to the federal minimum wage because a person can't do much with $4.25 an hour, when they have bills to pay and other expenses.

I think the minimum wage should be raised because a lot of the people who work the minimum wage jobs have kids.

I think that the minimum wage for Ohio should be raised. It is impossible to raise a family on five to six dollars an hour. The minimum wage in my opinion should have been raised a long time ago and should keep increasing as everything else increases. I think that the minimum wage needs to be equal with the way things are going in our economy today. It is hard to make rent if you have to pay 600 dollars for a decent appartment yet you only make enough to live in one costing 400. No feeling is worse than not being able to pay your bills.

The issue of minimum wage in Ohio is one that requires much deliberation. After considering both sides the gradual raising of the state minimum wage seems the most sensible. This way local businesses won't be put in fiscal shock, thus keeping inflation at bay while appeasing the needs of the working class.

I believe that the federal minimum wage should definitely be raised to 7.15 because people are seriously in poverty, but we need to make sure by raising it taxes don't rise with it.

I think it is time for a change in the minimum wage. The people of Ohio are also struggling with income and would benefit from an increase in the minimum wage. $4.25 is way too low!

i think they should change minimum wage. It has not been changed since 1991 and we are now in 2006-- times have changed and prices have gone up so why not the minimum wage?

I feel that minimum wage should increase to the negotiated $6.15. Utility bills are on the rise and most Ohioans must choose between paying rent or gas and electricity.

I believe that they should raise the minimium wage to federal standards. Most people who work under minimum wage are struggling to take care of what they need to do.

I'm confused as to how raising minimum wage would make businesses close, unless it would be because they don't make money as it is, and would have to pay their employees more. I think they should raise the minimum wage. I think it would help poverty decrease because yes you can live on minimum wage but BARELY. As for businesses closing, it's not everyone else's fault they can't get business. It's called investing! Put money aside for advertising to get your business out there-- don't get upset that you're not making money and the people working for your company aren't making money but would have to make the state's minimum wage to pay their bills. I don't think we're focused on poverty as much as we say we are.

Yes I believe that they should raise minimum wage. People are working for way less than they should be paid and cost of living now is not cheap. Workers deserve a fair wage.

I think Ohio lawmakers should increase the state's minimum wage to about $7-8 an hour. This is not too much to cause loss of jobs, business closings, and other issues mention above.
